Rosettes, Transepts, and Groin Vaults!?

Foreign terms to you, perhaps?

Well, they were pretty foreign to me before I started taking art history this year. I'm not really a religious person either, so churches were pretty far away from my designated niche. However, I've become fascinated with churches as of late. The architecture of these buildings is truly spectacular. There is so much attention to detail in almost every inch of these churches. And so many of them were built a long time ago (some nearly 1000 years ago!), so I am so shell-shocked by how amazing and well-built they are. They are so magnificent and just so beautiful to look at.

Anyway, we were assigned to pick a church in Boston and analyze it. I chose the Old South Church, which was built in a Gothic revival style in 1874. The exterior isn't very impressive, but I found the interior to be quite lovely. It was intricate, but muted. It was simple, yet beautiful. Something I'm inevitably drawn to: simplicity. This church, in my opinion, was the perfect blend of traditional and modern architecture.

In this "Color Play," I wanted to emulate the warm browns and vibrant jewel tones of the church. These colors in the church itself created such an inviting and welcoming atmosphere.

1. Stila Charmed Eye Palette: Jewel tones and warm coppers? This is basically the church in one palette.
2. L'Oreal HiP Pigment in Valiant: I wanted to imitate the stained glass windows, and this blue was the one for the job. It has such a pretty multi-dimensional effect.
3. MAC Eyeshadow in Moth Brown: This complex purple-gray-taupe was the perfect match for the exterior of the church.
4. L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Smoldering Plum: Y'all know I love this eyeshadow. It's exactly the color of the regal purple robes in the stained glass windows and icons!
5. Covergirl Outlast Lip Stain in Plum Pout: What's Christmastime without a little red?
6. L'Oreal Hip Eyeshadow Pencil in Unmistakable: And some more red!
7. Revlon Beyond Natural Eye Pencil in Brown: The rich, reddish browns of the Cherrywood furnishing.
8. MAC Fluidline in Rich Ground: Another warm, cozy brown that reminds me of the nave of the church.
9. Revlon Matte Eyeshadow in Rich Sable: There were darker brown bricks like this peppered throughout the faces of the church.
10. L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Sahara Treasure: To mimic the intricate caen limestone-carved screen, I decided to use this. The sheen adds some nice extra umph.
11. L'Oreal HiP Eyeshadow Duo in Gilded: A church has got to have some gold, so of course I added gold to my colors. In the church here, the gold is focused in the chandeliers and the cross hanging down from the ceiling.
12. MAC Blush in Loverush: This deep, maroon-y red is another jewel tone color that was used on the stained glass imagery and on the walls.

I thought it'd be nice to share these pictures since it's near Christmas! Like I said, I'm not really a religious person, but I've fallen (hard) in love with church architecture. Growing up I was a little creeped out by churches, but now I've come to really appreciate them! From an architectural and artistic standpoint, they are simply ah-may-zing. Unlike modern-day skyscrapers, these structures have been around for over a thousand years -- that in itself is something. Are you a fan of church architecture?

Overcast Blues

The past two weeks here in Boston have been gray and rainy. The ever-present clouds made me appreciate the little peeks of blue sky even more than usual. Clouds really do have their own kind of beauty. Their different shapes, sizes, and intensities can really make a day feel gloomy or cheery. They could be an eerie sign of forthcoming rain. Or they could just be stray clouds wandering the bright blue sky.

It was a beautifully, clear, cloudless sky today, though, which made me miss them a little bit. I thought I'd put together some colors to remind me of the skies of yesterday.

I pulled together a few dark, cool-toned eyeshadows. They consisted of blues, grays, taupes, and a few other muted colors. There was nothing too loud in the colors I picked out. There's always this fragile serenity to clouds, so I used that conceptualize my colors.

1. Avon Big Color Eye Pencil in Bluesmoke: Like the name suggests, this is a nice, deep navy blue with this gray smokiness to it. I think this would create the perfect navy blue smokey eye along with Revlon's Matte eyeshadow in Riviera Blue (3).
2. MAC Pigment in Deep Blue Green: This is one heck of a pigment. It has a rich, deep bluish-charcoal base, but then it also has this gorgeous teal duochrome that makes it just so pretty.
3. Revlon Matte Eyeshadow in Riviera Blue: I remember I thought these eyeshadows were the bomb when they came out. Oh silly young, makeup noob me. It's a nice, deep gray-blue color in the pan, but applies so unevely.
4. Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow in Frigid: In the pan, Frigid looks like a very promising, unique indigo color. However, it applies more purple rather than indigo. I still quite like it, though, because it's still a really different color. 
5. MAC Eyeshadow in Moth Brown: I received this from Dovey this past week. I've never had much luck with giveaways, so this was such a pleasant surprise! Moth Brown definitely did not disappoint. It's this complex purple-gray-taupe that's so darn pretty, she explains it better here.
6. MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe: Between the two cooler taupes, Satin Taupe looks so much more brown. It adds a layer of complexity to the colors I gathered.
7. Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow Quad in Sandstorm (the last shade): This is a deep, almost completely gray taupe. This really reminds me of dark rain clouds.
8. Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Birthday Suit: I thought the group needed a little light, and this was the best fit. As a champagne color, though, it's not too bright nor too dark, which was perfect here.
9. Rimmel Lipstick in Airy Fairy: This is a cool-toned, mauve-pink with a gold sheen. It's such a unique shade because the color itself is very cool, but the gold sheen warms it up and creates a lovely lip color.
10. Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Pink Truffle: What's a fall/cloudy color palette without a deep lip color? This is like my beloved Revlon Soft Rose's younger sister! It's a browny-rose pink that I just adore.

Is it just me, or would 5, 6, 7, and 8 make a lovely quad? I'd totally buy it.

Also, befitting with the theme is this Essie nail polish in Power Clutch. It's a rich, charcoal color -- totally reminiscent of smoke and dark clouds.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the Same!

Well, errr, same family!

For a heart-wrenching few seconds, I thought I had misplaced my beloved Revlon Soft Rose. In desperation, I looted my makeup drawer and found it lying in a corner, unscathed. Thankfully. I breathed a big sigh of relief. After rescuing my Soft Rose from that miserable little corner, I pulled out a lip gloss that I thought looked quite similar to the lipstick: Korres Natural Purple. And then I pulled out another one that looked similar and then another and then another...until I had 5 things in my hands and 5 swatches on my arm.

The theme turned out to be deep, plum/purple shades. It's funny though, because Soft Rose is well, a rose. But one shade let to another and it turned into a bunch of purples and plums. But I must say that there really isn't much actual purple going on in this group. However, the overall feel of the shades is very autumn-esque...and aren't plummy purples the quintessential fall color? I guess I gathered a little welcoming committee for the fall season, huh?

• Rimmel London Blush in Plum: An oldie but a goodie. This tiny little blush is quite lovely for the price I paid (under $1 since it was being discontinued). It's pigmented but just a little bit on the chalky side. The color is kind of this dirty plum but at the same time, it's also kind of a hybrid rosy color. It's almost like a slightly darker version of the popular Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed. Plum is probably my favorite fall blush color.
• Revlon Colorbust Lipstick in Soft Rose: This is my one of my most loved lipsticks ever. It's the perfect mid-tone lip color, not a pink or nude and not a red either. Soft Rose is, like its name suggests, a muted rose with a lovely cream finish. It's not very glossy or shiny, which I love because I can pat the color down to make it a stain. It's one of those no-brainer shades that I pop on as I rush out the door to school, and it adds such a nice, natural flush of color to my lips.
• L'Oreal HiP Jelly Balm in Succulent: It seems that L'Oreal's HiP line is basically non-existent nowadays. I remember that it was such a hit a couple years back, but now I hear next to nothing about it. They still have those awesome color liners, though, right? It's a shame because they had some pretty good products. Succulent is this grape jelly (how aptly named) color that sheers out to be a nice pink. The texture and feel of this is very reminiscent of the The Body Shop Born Lippy Lip Balms, but with a less overpowering scent.
• Korres Cherry Lipgloss in Natural Purple: When I pulled this out of the drawer, I thought that this was the lip gloss version of Soft Rose. But it really isn't. Natural Purple is more neutral/brown while Soft Rose leans slightly more pink/red. There's also this milky-looking factor to the gloss that the lipstick lacks. They're kind of close, though!
• Lancome Color Fever Plumper in Downtown Pink: I'm not sure why I picked this out to add to the group, the color doesn't really match all the others, but it sure is a really pretty autumn lip color. Downtown Pink is a deep magenta with a very fine golden sheen. The consistency is rather thick and very pigmented so it's almost like a liquid lipstick. I don't always like the tingly feeling that plumpers give your lips, but this one actually feels pretty comfortable.

Fall into Autumn

Your cheeks turn red from the crisp, cold air. You start bundling up in a nice chunky scarf. You lose the summer dresses and break out the warm pea coat. You chuckle a little the first day you're able to see your own breath. You are delighted by all the warm colors invading the trees. You see more and more leaves piling up on the ground with each passing day. Before you know it, you've fallen into the loveliest season of the year: autumn.

With September having finally arrived, the end of summer and the shuffling in of autumn is nigh. Autumn in New England has always been so magical. Whether it is going apple-picking or simply taking a walk in the park, the season brings a calm beauty to our surroundings that I just can't describe. The foliage is absolutely beautiful and the air so crisp. 

When I first got my DSLR last year in November, I was so giddy in testing out the settings and getting to know this baby that I went out a lot to take pictures throughout the city. I took these pictures just a week before the trees lost all their leaves. After half an hour or so, my fingers were basically all frozen but I still kept on snapping away.

The squirrel was so chubby and ready to hibernate.

And so, to welcome the incoming autumn, I pulled some makeup products from my collection that reminded me of the warm autumn leaves and the overall essence of the season. It made me think of cozy browns and taupes as well as deep plums and reds.

• L'Oreal HiP Shadow Stick in Meticulous (2): I can imagine a nice argyle sweater with this pale taupe, almost barley-like color.
• Revlon Beyond Natural Eye Pencil in Brown (1): This is the perfect warm red-brown, like rich, warm caramel. The pencil itself is nice and creamy.
• MAC Eyeshadow in Evening Aura (7): The pale, yellow-orange hue that leaves turn into in the beginning of the season is exemplified in this eyeshadow.
• Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow Quad in Coffee Bean (8): The consumption of hot coffee marks the beginning of the cooler months, and what better to represent that than this quad of cozy neutrals so aptly named?
• MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe (3): I have a thin, knitted beanie in this cult-favorite taupe from MAC. It's perfect for those cold, but not too cold days, not to mention beanies are so cute.
• Maybelline Expertwear Eyeshadow in Urban Brown (6): This is such a rich, teddy bear brown color, and I think autumn truly is the season of rich colors.
• Lancome Color Design Eyeshadow in Brown Mist (4): A cool brown with a forest green shimmer, I liken this to the exposed branches and tree trunks during the later half of the season.
• Maybelline Expertwear Eyeshadow in Cinnamon Spice (5): This is probably my quintessential fall eyeshadow color. Not only is the name of the color oh-so appropriate, the color itself reminds me of spiced cider, Thanksgiving, and of course, cinnamon/pumpkin spice lattes.

My favorite type of foliage is when the leaves turn a deep, vibrant, gorgeous red. It's breathtaking. The red is such a contrast against the usually cloudless, pale blue sky and against the other foliage. I likened this color to lip and cheek products.

• Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain in Plum Pout (11): More than anything, this is a deep red rather than a plum. Freshly applied, the color is so deep and pigmented, but after a while it leaves the perfect berry stain that I associate with autumn.
• Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Soft Rose (12): This is a lovely muted rose that is just perfect for this season -- definitely my staple autumn lip.
• NARS Lipstick in Flamenco (13): Vibrant red lips are always popular, but this one allows you the option of building up the color or leaving it sheer.
• Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment (14): The cold weather can take a toll on your lips, so this is great to keep them moisturized. It has a very pleasant lemon scent.
• Rimmel Blush in Plum (10): I wish I had a deeper plum blush, but this will do for now. It is a muted dusty plum color that provides the right amount of flush to the cheeks.
• L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Smoldering Plum (9): You know I love this already, but basically this is the deep purple/plum color of the season. 
• Jack Black Lip Balm in Lemon & Chamomile (15): Another lemon scent, eh? Well this one reminds me of yummy lemon honey tea...which is perfect to warm yourself up in cold weather!

So, are you guys looking forward to the cooler weather of autumn as much as I am? And to those of you in the southern hemisphere, it's going to be spring and summer soon, I think? I've always wondered, what's it like to have Christmas during the summer? Ah, but I can't wait for the colder months, mmmm...

Beautiful Blue Beach

Haaaayyyyyy guissseeezz! 

I'm back from Puerto Rico! It's actually been almost a week since I've come back, but my internship started so I haven't had the time to check back in. My Puerto Rico post will come...soon enough! I took soooo many pictures that I don't even want to look at them yet, let alone edit them. In the meantime, I did sift through some of them and found these shots of the beautiful beach my resort was next to. They really blue me away (ehehehe I had to).

The varying colors of blue, light blue, dark blue, blue-green, green-blue...such a multitude of blues blending together into the horizon. The sky, the clouds, the water -- they were all so beautiful and clear. The sand was so finely grained and had such a vibrant color. As the warm waves washed up on shore and retreated back again, I pondered about life and its mystique.

 

The only things obscuring complimenting the sky were these fluffy white clouds, passing by and moving along their ways. How great it would be to reach up and grab some off to eat like cotton candy (though it wouldn't taste very sweet).

And so, I decided to pull some colors from my collection to remind myself of that temporary getaway, that "paradise lost." While definitely not as beautiful and vibrant, these do make me reminisce about where I was a week ago. Along with this little turtle as my companion, I took another trip back to Puerto Rico in my mind.

Clockwise from my travel companion (Just noticed how it went from blues to gold/champagnes...I did not plan that little spectrum -- how cool!):

• Urban Decay eyeshadow in Painkiller: This gorgeous, vibrant aqua blue screamed "THE OCEAN" to me. It's so bright and blue-tiful. 'nuff said.
• L'Oreal HiP pigment in Valiant: This is such a complex blue to me. The base color is a cornflower blue, but because of the purple duochrome, it flashes an indigo that's so pretty. I don't know about you, but an indigo eyeshadow is hard to come by in my opinion. 
• Lancome Le Crayon Kohl in Le Bleu de Jim: I've showcased the beauty of this eyeliner before, but here again is this beautiful, bright, super-vibrant, kapow cobalt blue eyeliner PENCIL. I still, to this day, am shocked by how bright it is despite being a pencil. This color really represented the sky to me. Sometimes the sky can be so blue, it's shocking.
• L'Oreal Color Chrome Eyeliner in Gold Charge: This is the most perfect gold color ever. Not to mention, the eyeliner is smooth and stays on forever. Gold is such a summery color. Like coral, it invokes the images of the beach, the sand, and the hot sun.
• L'Oreal Colour Juice Lip Gloss in Strawberry Smoothie: I picked this not only because of the name, but also because the color of it is exactly the same shade as how the sand was. Yes, it was that orange.
• MAC lipstick in Marquise D': This has the prettiest golden sheen ever. It may seem like a boring ol' sheer pink lip color at first, but that sheen running through it just makes it beautiful. I think that this is perfect for summer, not only is the lipstick light and sheer, but the color is just gorgeous.
• L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Iced Latte: This is the quintessential champagne color. And white is the quintessential summer color. People wear white bikinis, white shirts, white dresses, white hats, white pants -- white everything in the summer. It helps people stay slightly cooler since white reflects sunlight (as opposed to black). Here, Iced Latte is the perfect balance of that summer white and the beautiful pearls in oysters. 

I just realized there was a whole lot of L'Oreal goin' on in this grouping...oh well! Here are swatches of the colors. Doesn't it scream the beach to you?

It's only my third day at the internship and already I'm being exposed to so much design and architecture. It's really amazing how much work goes into one single project. I can't help but feel scared and overwhelmed about what my future could be like. But at the same time, I'm really loving every minute of it. 

Charlie and the Chocolate Swatchery

In the midst of writing my research paper on Roald Dahl, I took a break to play with some of my makeup. I had hit a bump in the road, so I decided to take a breather to loosen up my mind a little. Isn't it awesome that I'm doing my research paper on Roald Dahl? I'm comparing his children's and adult's stories. I've always loved him as an author (his short stories are fantastic), and so I was really glad my English teacher approved of him for my research project!

One of the books I'm using is the classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so I pulled some inspiration from all the sweets and chocolates to make a theme for my swatches. 

So I was basically still doing "research" on it, right? Ehehe. Here is one of my favorite passages from the book:

"Charlie was holding tightly onto his grandfather's bony old hand. He was in a whirl of excitement. Everything he had seen so far -- the great chocolate river, the waterfall, the huge sucking pipes, the candy meadows, the Oompa-Loompas, the beautiful punk boat, and most of all, Mr. Willy Wonka himself -- had been so astonishing that he began to wonder whether there could be more astonishments left. Where were they going now? What were they going to see? And what in the world was going to happen in the next room?"

Here's what I pulled out from my stash:

• C.O. Bigelow Winter Cordials Glossy Lip Balm in Triple Hot Chocolate: I just had to. Triple Hot Chocolate? YUM! The smell can get a little overpowering, though. The gloss is very nicely moisturizing (like most C.O. Bigelow's) and has the tiniest bit of subtle shimmer.
• Revlon Beyond Natural Defining Eye Pencil in Brown: It's such a pretty, rich red-brown color! For some reason, it reminds me of peanut butter chocolates. It's really nice and smooth.
• MAC Pigment in Cocomotion: Hehehe, just for the name, y'know? It's a gorgeous bronze gold with a stunning metallic finish.
• Benefit Box Blush/Highlighter in Sugarbomb: It has chocolate on the box! The four colors mixed together create a nice and sweet pale peachy pink color. The blush smell nice too!
• Revlon Matte Eyeshadow in Rich Sable: This color just screams dark chocolate to me! It's such a nice and smooth dark brown. This used to be my go-to color for defining the crease (I don't really wear much makeup nowadays).
• L'Oreal HiP Shadow Stick in Meticulous: The prettiest pale taupe ever! This reminds me of chocolate milk; it's one of the best shadow stick bases ever. I love love love it.
• Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow Quad in Coffee Bean: I realize I have a lot of makeup items with food names. Or rather companies like to name their shades after food. This is a great everyday eye palette, and I'm quite sad they don't have this quad anymore (I think).
• B&BW Liplicious Lip Gloss in Strawberry Bling: Needed something to pump up the excitement, yeah? Having all muted colors would have been a little boring, so this sparkle/glitter-packed gloss was perfect. It's SO condensed with glitters -- so pretty! It reminds me of sugar and rock candy.
• The Body Shop Lip Butter in Coconut: This smells and feels delicious! I really want to get the mango one too, especially now that they're 2 for $10. But boy, I really do NOT need another lip balm. I need to get crackin' on them!

This was really fun and such a nice little break! I think not only having a color theme but an actual theme is really fun when you're just having some fun swatching your makeup. Well, I just like swatching stuff in general LOL. So here are the swatches:

Cupid's Colors

"Life without you would be like a broken pencil...pointless."

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I hope you had a lovely day with your friends OR your significant other (if you have one). I spent mine at school (of course), but it was still a festive day full of my lovely friends!

For my school newspaper, the past two weeks I (along with my fellow associates of course) had been selling our yearly carnations with cheesy pick up lines in tow. They're always such fun and games, and look! I got a few from my friends! :)

Carnations are actually rather pretty flowers, no?

Also, for my art class we decided to do a little something special today. That was to put our interpretations of the heartbeat into four 2x2 squares. This is what I ended up with! They contrast and correspond with each other.

My favorite one of the four (and also what I think most applies to me) was this! "A world of colors..." I actually made a mistake on this at first, but it turned out well, right?

And so, in honor of this love-filled day, I decided to swatch some makeup! I think this is going to be a series called 'Color Play,' starting with the one I did a few weeks ago. Today, I went for some romantic, cute, sweet shades like rose, pink, and red.

Starting with the lipsticks and going clockwise:

• Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick in Pink in the Afternoon -- this is the most unique pink lip color I've ever encountered. All the other pinks I own and quite a lot of the pinks on the market are cool-toned. Pink in the Afternoon is a warm, mid-tone pink that I find so sophisticated. I adore it and I should probably wear it more often.
• Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Soft Rose -- a soft, romantic, effortless rosy shade. This has been my everyday lipstick as of late; I love it very much!
• Sephora Flashy Liner in Flashy Pink -- you know those cutesy pale pink-tinted pearls? This is basically that in an eyeliner. Looks lovely on the waterline and the inner corners of the eye!
• Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Woodstock -- the craziest fuschia pink eyeshadow ever! It has a lovely satin finish and the eyeshadow itself is buttery smooth (like most UD shadows).
• Rimmel Powder Blush in Pink Rose -- I raved about this on my old blog and I still think it deserves that praise. For such a cheap price, the pigmentation and texture of the blush is phenomenal. Too bad it's discontinued now!! This gives such a cute pop of pink on your cheeks.
• Covergirl Outlast Lipstain in Plum Pout -- this is the only red lipcolor I own and I love it to death! It creates the prettiest berry-stained lip! I really want to get more red lip products, any recommendations?
• MAC Pigment in Kitschmas -- a gorgeous silver glitter with a pale pink sheen/duo-chrome running through. It definitely is a really unique color.
• Revlon Superlustrous Lipgloss in Pink Pop -- the best neon pink lip gloss ever! The swatch below does not do it justice at all (I was too focused on making it into a heart).

CAUTION: Abusing of hearts! Please avert your eyes if you must!

Ah, well I thought it was cute. But it kind of turned into too much...what do you think? Too much? LOL! I guess making my swatches into a gif is going to be a thing for this series, huh? This time it's much clearer!

Sunny Day Colors

It was an unusually sunny, warm day today at around 45-degrees. Or maybe it just seemed really sunny because the past week has been gray and dreary. But I had to squint my eyes so hard to shield the sunlight out, I didn't even see where I was walking half the time I was out.

The gorgeous blue sky and blinding sunlight reminded me of late spring/early summer. Though winter is my absolute favorite season (I love the cold), I couldn't help but think of summer days today.

The CNY flowers my mom bought are blooming! Including those fuzzy ones...hmm what are they called?

And so, the beautiful weather inspired me to go through my stash and find some products that reminded me of summer and its warmth. I just felt like playing with my much-neglected makeup. Here is what I ended up with:

• Revlon Superlustrous Lip Gloss in Coral Reef -- a gorgeous creamy coral pink color. By far one of my favorite glosses.
• MAC Eyeshadow in Evening Aura -- a shimmery pastel orange shade. The first MAC product I ever got!
• Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in Nice Melons -- a gorgeous pale peach color with the prettiest gold/pink sheen. I don't even know how to describe it, but it's the prettiest all-over lid color ever. Will definitely show y'all in an FOTD when I get the chance.
• Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti -- a sheer, shiny orange. Will tell more about my thoughts on this in a post to come!
• L'Oreal HiP Color Chrome Eyeliner in Gold Charge -- a gorgeous gold eyeliner. The color is so gold and intense, one of my favorite products ever. It really brightens up the eyes.
• Stila Charmed Eyeshadow Palette -- a beautiful array of warm, summery shades. This palette just screams 'summer' to me, from the eyeshadows down to the gold palette. And y'know, the buttery texture of the eyeshadows is a plus too.
• MAC Blush in Springsheen -- A peachy pink with a strong gold sheen. By far the most beautiful blush I own. The sheen is just so I-don't-kn0w-how-to-describe-it-but-it's-so-freaking-pretty.

I made an animation for the swatches. It might not have been the best idea, but I didn't want to bombard y'all with pictures of basically the same thing. So! If you can pick out the products and their corresponding swatches, ten points to Gryffindor (or whichever house you prefer)!
